Buying piglets: what to confirm before collection

A clear collection plan saves both buyer and seller time. These are the practical details worth confirming before you travel.

Before you travel

Start with the exact animal and sale details

“Piglets available” is only the beginning of the conversation. Before arranging collection, confirm how many are currently available, their approximate age, whether males and females are available, and the breed or cross if that information is known.

Also confirm the selling price, whether the price is per animal, and whether any reservation or payment arrangement applies. If you need several piglets, make that clear from the start so the seller can confirm that the required number is actually available together.

At Zane Farms, current quantity, price and sale notes are intended to be kept in the live farm catalogue. Because livestock changes quickly, buyers should still confirm the latest position before travelling.

Quick buyer checklist

  • Current quantity available
  • Approximate age and collection readiness
  • Male/female availability
  • Breed or cross, where known
  • Price and reservation terms
  • Collection date and time

Management handover

Ask what the piglets are used to

A useful handover includes the feed the piglets are currently eating and any important management information the seller can provide. Sudden changes in environment and feeding can be stressful for young animals, so knowing what they are accustomed to helps the buyer plan the transition.

If you already keep pigs, decide beforehand how new arrivals will be introduced to the existing group. Where practical, keep new animals under observation before mixing them directly with established stock, and use a veterinarian or animal-health professional for health-plan advice specific to your farm.

Prepare before collection

  • A secure pen with shade and clean water
  • Appropriate feed ready for arrival
  • A plan for introducing new animals
  • A safe transport method
  • Enough time to collect without rushing

Transport

Collection is part of the purchase

Before leaving home, confirm the collection location and make sure the vehicle or trailer can transport the animals securely with suitable ventilation and protection from weather. Avoid arriving with a transport setup that still needs to be improvised at the farm.

For longer journeys, discuss the route and timing with an experienced livestock transporter or animal-health professional where necessary. The objective is simple: move the animals calmly and safely from the seller’s property to their new environment.

The best purchase experience is one where there are no surprises at collection. Confirm the facts, prepare the receiving pen, bring suitable transport and ask questions before you travel.
